Asam Mefenamat adalah obat golongan anti peradangan dan antiinflamasi nonsteroid (OAINS) yang berfungsi untuk meredakan nyeri seperti sakit gigi, sakit kepala dan nyeri haid. Asam mefenamat termasuk ke dalam label Obat Keras (ditandai dengan lingkaran merah bertuliskan huruf K berwarna hitam dan garis tepi berwarna hitam di kemasan luar obat) yang artinya dalam pembeliannya harus dengan resep dokter. Tapi kok saya tetap bisa membelinya di Apotek meski tanpa resep dokter? Iya betul, Asam Mefenamat tetap dapat dibeli di Apotek meski tanpa resep dokter, karena obat ini termasuk kedalam DOWA (Daftar Obat Wajib Apotek) jadi obat ini tetap dapat dibeli walaupun tanpa resep dokter, hanya saja pada penyerahan dan pemberian informasi mengenai obatnya harus dilakukan oleh Apoteker.
Asam Mefenamat tidak disarankan untuk dikonsumsi dalam jangka waktu lama. Rekomendasi batas pemakaian asam mefenamat mengatasi nyeri pada sakit gigi adalah 7 hari. Selain itu, asam mefenamat dapat meningkatkan asam lambung yang menyebabkan iritasi lambung, pendarahan usus dan tukak lambung. Oleh sebab itu, penggunaan obat ini pada penderita asam lambung dan tukak lambung sebaiknya dihindari.
